NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The 2013 Lipscomb cross country season has high expectations. In order to meet those expectations, the season needs to begin.
The Purple and Gold begin their trek on Friday at the Belmont Opener at Percy Warner Park in Vaughn’s Gap.
“It is a short, long season,” Bill Taylor, director of cross country and track and field, said. “This is a pretty low key meet, so it will be fun to see where we are. We host the Atlantic Sun Championships here, so it will be good to get our feet wet on our course. We get a couple of opportunities to race on our course these first couple of meets.”
The preseason USTFCCCA regional polls have the Lady Bisons No. 7 in the South Region and the Bisons No. 10.
Gearing up for the opening meet, Taylor said the practices have been great.
“Training has been unbelievable,” Taylor said. “We are at a level that we have never been before at any point during the season. We need to translate that to the race, of course.
“We are having the best practices on both sides that I have ever seen. And we are two weeks behind in our training. We went two weeks longer in our base training this year and delayed our quality work by two weeks.”
The reason for delaying the quality work is because goals have changed for the entire season.
“We adjusted it because we expect our team to be at the NCAA Championships,” Taylor said. “To do that, we planned our training accordingly. In the past, we wanted to be at our physical best at the A-Sun Championships and maybe the regional. We want to drive through that.”
Not looking too far ahead, Taylor has specific goals in place for the first meet.
“We have some goals,” Taylor said. “How our team interacts types of goals. For our freshmen we need to get their first college racing experience. It will be a great opportunity to see where we are, translating practices into competition.
“We want to get going and keep building from there.”
