MACON, Ga. – After sitting in second place for most of the season, the Lipscomb men’s cross country squad has been ranked first by the Atlantic Sun Conference Coaches in the latest poll released Thursday.
Although the Bisons are ranked first, ETSU garnered seven first place votes to Lipscomb’s three. However the Purple and Gold received one more point to edge ETSU 90 to 89 in the poll.
“To be honest, the polls have been disappointing on the men’s side this year,” Bill Taylor, director of cross country and track and field, said. “When we beat ETSU head-to-head early in the season, the polls came out with ETSU in first, despite having fewer first place votes.
“Now ETSU has seven first place votes to our three, but somehow we are ranked ahead of them. It doesn’t make sense. ETSU should be ranked first, and as far as I am concerned, they are ranked first. It is disappointing that coaches are either not taking this seriously, or are playing games with the polls.”
With the polls aside, the A-Sun Championship is on the horizon and Taylor expects to see a battle.
“This will be an interesting championship,” Taylor said. “Our men and ETSU have looked to be very close all season. I’m not sure either team is better than we were early in the season.
“In my mind, that leaves the door open for North Florida, Florida Gulf Coast, USC Upstate or someone like that to win. We have to be aware of what we are doing and be ready next Saturday. This will be a dog fight.”
On the women’s side, the Lady Bisons continue to unanimously hold the top spot as they have all year. North Florida remains in second with 88 points.
“The women are excited for the championship and to prove their ranking,” Taylor said. “It’s fun to go after our third championship in front of the home crowd on our course.”
The A-Sun Championships are Saturday, Nov. 2, at Vaughn’s Gap in Percy Warner Park. The Lipscomb men are seeking their first-ever conference title while the Lady Bisons are two-time defending champions.
