NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb cross country runner Barbara Lee Ball picked up her first Atlantic Sun Women’s Runner of the Week honor, announced by the conference office Wednesday.
Ball, a sophomore from Nashville, competed this past week at the Belmont Opener finishing 10th out of more than 115 participants.
"Barbara is as tough a runner as I have ever coached,” said Bill Taylor, director of cross country. “She put herself in great position in this race, and gave herself a great opportunity to succeed.”
She ran the 5-K in 18:04.40 improving her time from last year’s meet by one minute and 10 seconds. Ball’s time also tied her personal record in the event.
"Barbara's performance is a really good sign for our team,” Taylor said. “She has improved a ton, and she will be another contender on our team and another powerful presence in our pack."
Ball would have finished in approximately fifth place, but was passed by several other runners after she mistook the entry chute for the finish line.
The honor marks Ball’s first cross country Runner of the Week award.
Ball will slip back into action with the cross country squad Saturday Sept. 13 taking part in the Vanderbilt Invite.
