MACON, Ga. – After kicking off the season with a strong race at the Belmont Opener, junior Sally Larson has been named the Atlantic Sun Conference Runner of the Week for the fifth time in her career.
Larson has earned the honor twice previously in both cross country and track and field, including once each for indoor and outdoor track and field.
"Sally ran a terrific race,” Lipscomb Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Bill Taylor said. “She was patient and aggressive at the right places. The second half of her race was especially strong.
The Washington native finished fourth overall at the Belmont Opener with a time of 17:34.40, a program-best mark for the race which the Bisons compete in every year.
She also broke the Lipscomb junior-class record for the course, Vaughn’s Gap, which is the team’s home course. The Purple and Gold race there several times per season.
"This was a great way for her to start her season,” Taylor said. “It shows her she can run with and beat anyone.”
Larson helped the Lady Bisons to a victory at the meet over a field of five other Division I programs, including No. 22 Vanderbilt for the first time.
"As I've said, we have at least six or seven women that can be our number one runner on any given day,” Taylor said. “That really takes the pressure off everyone. They know they just need to work together and run for each other, and everyone will have amazing success. It's a fun team and a very talented team.”
