NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb cross country squad will kick off its season on Friday as the Bisons head to Percy Warner Park to take on the Belmont Opener 5K.
The Purple and Gold are looking to start another successful season as the men’s team has won five of the last six ASUN titles, including last season’s, and the women have won six of the last seven conference crowns.
The Bisons head into the season as the preseason men’s and women’s favorites in the ASUN, and both squads are ranked in the USTFCCCA Preseason Region Poll.
With three meets in the first three weeks of the season, Lipscomb has a busy start to the 2018 campaign.
“We have three meets in a row to start the season, so we selected a travel squad from our training camp time trial,” Lipscomb Director of Cross Country Bill Taylor said.
“12 men and 10 women will be traveling to New York next weekend and will not race at Belmont. Then everyone will race in three weeks at Vanderbilt.”
At the Opener, the Bisons will take on a field of eight schools, including local programs Vanderbilt and Tennessee State.
“This is a great opportunity for those that are racing Friday,” Taylor said. “Every year there are athlete’s that place outside our top 10 in the time trial that make the top nine conference championship team by the end of the year. So, Friday at Belmont is the first opportunity to learn, grow, and take steps toward earning a championship roster spot at the end of the season.”
