Cross country begins season at Belmont Opener

NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb cross country squad started off the season on Friday afternoon at the Belmont Opener, which took place at nearby Percy Warner Park in Nashville.

The men’s squad finished third with 104 total points, placing behind winner Belmont and fellow Nashville squad Vanderbilt.

On the women’s side, the Lady Bisons placed fourth with 105 total points, finishing behind Belmont, Vanderbilt, and North Alabama.

Senior Andrew Ayers led the way for the Bisons with a 10th place finish with a time of 16:07.36.

He was followed by freshmen Ryan Bush (16:14.72) and Jared Touart (16:37.67) who finished 14th and 19th, respectively, in their first-ever collegiate meet.

Fellow freshman Benjamin Underwood (17:17.15) and Josh Hinkle (17:23.14) grabbed 35th and 37th in what was also their first college meet.

Sophomore Lindsey Marriott paced the women with a time of 19:35.52 to place 12th.

She was followed by sophomore Haley Kling (20:54.52), senior Madison Colley (21:03.58), and junior Cassie Harasts (22:04.50) in 21st, 22nd, and 28th, respectively.

Lipscomb only had 11 runners in the meet, as 12 men and 10 women were designated for the travel roster for next weekend’s trip to the Fordham Invite in New York.

Next Up: The Bisons will head to New York for the Fordham Invite on Sat. Sept. 8.
