Wednesday, March 31, 2010Brittney Beard has chosen a career many would envy because she has been able to work in an area that she has long been involved with - golf. While at Lipscomb she played on a team that tied for the best 18-hole score (311) in the history of the program at the Troy Invitational in 2006. Her sister, Lindsey, is a member of the Lipscomb golf team. Brittney took some time out of her work day as membership director for the Tennessee Section PGA of America to talk with LipscombSports.com.
What sport(s) did you play at Lipscomb? What years? Who were your coaches?
I was on the golf team from 2003-2007. I played for both coaches Ralph Samples and Buddy Harston.
What is your fondest athletic memory at Lipscomb?
I really enjoyed the athletic chapel that we used to have. It was a really good time for me to catch up with the athletes from other sports and find out what was going on in their lives.
I also enjoyed traveling with the team. The girls on the golf team are still some of my best friends. There were about five of us that went through all five years together.
Who had the biggest influence on you during your athletic career at Lipscomb? How?
The most influential person would have to be my coaches. Both Coach Ralph Samples and Coach Buddy Harston taught me how to balance my time between work, practice, school and classes. They were always there when you needed them and the encouraged me to accomplish my goals. They always made golf trips enjoyable and made the team a family. I am so thankful for the years I got to spend with each of them and they both have made an impact in my life.
What is your fondest non-athletic memory from your time at Lipscomb?
It would probably be the relationships I built with friends and professors. There are some of them that I can still call now that I am out of school with any issues or questions. They are happy to help me.
What is the most valuable thing you gained or learned from your time at Lipscomb?
My strength as a Christian woman and the way the Lord has guided me over the years. He molded me and shaped me a lot while I was in school. My walk with Christ was strengthened a ton while I was at Lipscomb.
Who was your favorite professor? Why?
Dr. John Crawford and Dr. Randy Steger. They were two of my most influential professors. They taught me a lot about life outside of school and what to expect when the real world came around. They helped mold me and prepare me for the job that I have.
Where do you live now?
I live in Franklin, Tenn.
Who is your employer? What is your occupation? What does your position entail?
I am in my fourth year with the Tennessee Section of the PGA. I am the membership director. I do a little bit of everything. I put together the education and career advancement classes for PGA professionals at club facilities. They do service hours and I monitor those. I deal with the national office on a daily basis to make sure all of our members are in the correct classification and that they are abiding by the PGA guidelines.
Tell us about your family
I am single.
