LEDBETTER, Ky. – Lipscomb freshman women’s golfer Samantha Griffith opened her collegiate career on Monday by leading the opening round of the 2014 Jan Weaver-Murray State Invitational .
The newcomer paced the field by carding a 71 in her debut with the Lady Bisons. She holds a one-shot lead over Western Kentucky’s Ellinor Haag, who finished even par on the afternoon.
Senior Morgan Bucher fired a 79 finishing one shot ahead of junior Miriam Parker, who fired a first-round 80. The duo is tied for 30th and 38th, respectively.
Senior Samantha Khan and freshman Jenny Meusing rounded out the competitors for the Lady Bisons. Khan posted an 83, while Meusing turned in an 86.
Lipscomb sits in ninth place after the first day of competition at the Drake Creek Golf Club. The Lady Bisons combined to shoot 313 on the day. Western Kentucky sits atop the standings after day one with a 295.
The event concludes on Tuesday with 36 holes of action in the Bluegrass State.
