Women's golf in seventh after opening day of Banister Classic

GLENCOE, Ala. – The Lipscomb women’s golf team opened the 2014 Chris Banister Golf Classic with a 316, +28 on Sunday to finish the first day in seventh place.

Troy paced the 11-team field with a +17, 305 at the Silver Lakes Golf Course that features a par-72 layout and plays 5,943 yards.

Freshman Samantha Griffith continued her strong play with a +3, 75 to finish in a tie for fifth and sits just two strokes off the lead heading into Monday’s round two of the tournament.  Junior Miriam Parker turned in a top-30 performance on Sunday as well after shooting an 80, +8 to end the day tied for 27th.

Competing in her first event for the Lady Bisons, freshman Charley Benefield finished three strokes behind parker in a tie for 38th.  Senior Morgan Bucher and freshman Jenny Muesing rounded out the competitors for the Purple and Gold with a +14, 86 and a +24, 96, respectively.

The 54-hole event continues with 18 holes on Monday with a final 18 to be played on Tuesday in the Heart of Dixie.
