Women's Golf Leads Field After Day One Of MSU Greenbrier Invitational

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Lipscomb women’s golf team started its 2019-20 campaign on a strong note and is leading the field at 606 (306-301) after the first day at the MSU Greenbrier Invitational.

Sophomore Emily Keeling had a fantastic showing on the links and sits atop the leaderboard at 144 (72-72).

Keeling tallied back-to-back rounds of even par to give her a one-stroke advantage over Austin Peay’s Meghann Stamps (74-71=145). Keeling’s rounds of 72 are her lowest career 18-hole scores and her 36-hole total of 144 also sets a career best for the Farragut, Tenn. native.

Keeling also tied the school record for lowest individual 36-hole total. She has now etched her name in the record books next to Miriam Parker, who tallied a 36-hole, 144 total in 2013 at the Charles Braun Jr. Intercollegiate.

The Bisons also got top-15 performances from senior Rachael McMahan and freshman Olivia DiPaolo. McMahan finished her first day of play tied for seventh at 152 (77-75), while DiPaolo finished tied for 13th at 155 (78-77).

A freshman duo of Kaylee Wu and Mary Kate Smith rounded out the starting lineup as both finished tied for 22nd at 158. Wu carded rounds of 81 and 77, while Smith carded rounds of 78 and 80.

Lipscomb also sent two individuals to Lexington in freshman Izzy Cantwell and sophomore Sarah Hinton. Cantwell is tied for 13th at 155 (77-78) after making her debut, while Hinton is in 40th at 166 (86-80).

“I am really pleased with the way my girls came out of the gate today for our first two rounds of the season,” head coach Jesse Lawley said. “It really shows our offseason work and our prep work heading into the rounds today. The job is not done until tomorrow, but we look forward to the grind.”

The Purple and Gold will look to keep their lead and close out the tournament with the third and final round tomorrow.
