Where are they now? with Celeste Peacock Middleton
What sports did you play at Lipscomb?

I played basketball from 1982-1986.  My coaches were Frank Bennett and Trish Duty.

What is your fondest athletic memory at Lipscomb?

I have so many fond memories while on the basketball team….one of the most memorable moments was in 1982 or 1983.  We had a limited budget so when we traveled, I drove our family van and Coach Bennett drove a 15-passenger van.  We were scheduled to play Carson Newman and there was snow in the forecast.  So, we moved up our departure time about an hour to beat the potential bad weather. Well, it snowed so much, that I- 40 was closed as we were traveling.

While I was driving, Nina Carroll was trying to keep her eyes on Coach Bennett’s tail lights on his van.  Near Crossville, a vehicle came across the lane in front of me while it was spinning and I barely was able to manuever the van in between two cars to avoid a wreck.  One teammate, that normally was very calm, began to lose her composure and another teammate that I would have thought would have lost her composure pulled out her Bible and began reading the book of Psalms to us.

This trip took us seven hours to reach Knoxville where we were going to try to eat dinner.  Unfortunately, we were beaten by Carson Newman and Coach Bennett was furious.  Well all the students that had Coach Bennett for Fortran class, ( O.K., younger generation, that was a computer language class), which included me, were affected by the loss.  Coach Bennett graded the programs that had been turned in the prior week and he was brutal on the grades. He had red marks all over everyone’s papers!  I have laughed about that trip so many times!

Who had the biggest influence on you during your athletic career at Lipscomb? How?

Coach Bennett influenced me the most while I was at Lipscomb.  He taught me discipline and  to develop a good work ethic.  Coach Bennett is a man of integrity & shines with the joy of the Lord. I knew that he cared for me as well as every young lady on the basketball team.  I feel like I influenced him too!  What people do not know is I am the one that talked Coach Bennett into allowing us to have warm-up music before basketball games at McQuiddy.  We loved warming up to the Gap Band!

What is your fondest non-athletic memory from your time at Lipscomb?

The fondest non-athletic memories have to do with the bond I have with some girls that have become part of my inner circle and meeting my husband, Michael Middleton.  Desiree Barnes, Debbie Bowers, Lori Bumpas, Cindy Luna, Kim Leeper and  I became friends while we were at Lipscomb.  During college we would run to the lake to ski, ride ATVs in the snow and  travel to the beach. Theses friendship are as strong today as they were in college.  Michael and  I usually spent our time in the gym playing basketball.

What is the most valuable thing you gained or learned from your time at Lipscomb?

One of the valuable things that I gained while at Lipscomb was the development of my Bible knowledge.  I grew up in a Christian home and  attended a public high school, but never had a lot of time just studying books of the Bible.  The quality of the Bible classes and being around other Christians was very valuable to me as I grew spiritually.

Who was your favorite professor? Why?

My major was Business Management and  my minor was Computer Science.  I had several professors that I enjoyed studying under while I attended Lipscomb. Some in particular are  Mrs. Patti Dugger,  Al Austelle and  Dr. Axel Swang.

Where do you live now?

I  live in Murfreesboro, Tenn., which is where I lived during my childhood days.

Who is your employer? What is your occupation? What does your position entail?

I am an agent for State Farm Insurance Co.  I sell insurance and financial services.

Tell us about your family.

I love my family.  My husband is Michael Middleton.  We have two children, Killen & Alexa.  Killen is a senior and Alexa is an eighth grader at Middle Tennessee Christian.  We are having so much fun as a family and are looking forward to this summer spending some time at the beach as well as watching the kids play in some basketball tournaments.
