Wednesday, July 07, 2010Tom Kelsey played for the Lipscomb Bisons basketball team from 1982-86 and was a key part of the 1986 NAIA National Championship team. He is the menâ€™s basketball coach at Belhaven University. Tom is busy with summer camps, recruiting and a new addition to his family, but he was able to spend a few minutes with lipscombsports.com to answer a few questions.
What sport(s) did you play at Lipscomb? What years? Who were your coaches?
â€œI played basketball from 1982-86. Don Meyer was the head coach. Rusty McCain, Mike Roller and Ralph Turner were assistant coaches.â€
What is your fondest athletic memory at Lipscomb?
â€œBeing a part of the Lipscomb program and Lipscomb family was important because those brought the best memories. Winning the National Championship in 1986 was the second most important.â€
Who had the biggest influence on you during your athletic career at Lipscomb? How?
â€œCoach Don Meyer for his daily commitment to excellence and his desire to see others commit to excellence. He wanted our best each and every day and that taught us as players to strive for high goals the rest of our lives.â€
What is your fondest non-athletic memory from your time at Lipscomb?
â€œI became a Christian at Lipscomb so I am indebted to Lipscomb for the impact that so many people made in my life.â€
What is the most valuable thing you gained or learned from your time at Lipscomb?
"It's not what you achieve, it's what you become."
Who was your favorite professor? Why?
â€œEarl Lavender. He made the Bible real. He could relate to students and had a tremendous impact on my life at a crucial time for me. He knew how to effectively communicate and care deeply for his students.â€

â€œMadison, Miss. I work at Belhaven University in Jackson, Miss.â€

â€œI am the head basketball coach at Belhaven University.â€

â€œI have five kids, son Hadley, 17; and daughters Brynne, 16; Elise, 13; MiKailie, 4; and Brooklyn, born June 21, 2010; and a beautiful wife, Edie.â€
