Max Mayes played basketball at Lipscomb back when they were a part of the VAA. Now he spends his time doing mission work with his wife, and visiting their children. He took some time this week to talk with lipscombsports.com to talk about his memories from his time at Lipscomb.
What sport(s) did you play at Lipscomb? What years? Who were your coaches?
“I played basketball from 1958-1961. I transferred to Lipscomb for my last three years. Charles Morris, or “Tiger”, was my coach.”
What is your fondest athletic memory at Lipscomb?
“When I was a junior we were in the Volunteer Athletic Association and we won the conference that year.”
Who had the biggest influence on you during your athletic career at Lipscomb? How?
“Coach Morris, because I came from a very small high school in Kentucky. Then when I came there the last three years I was on the varsity and was a starter and enjoyed playing basketball there.”
What is your fondest non-athletic memory from your time at Lipscomb?
“My favorite memory would be the fact that I met my wife there. We got married in August before I started my senior year there.”
What is the most valuable thing you gained or learned from your time at Lipscomb?
The classes that I took with the association of the Christian instructors and faculty. That was very important in my life.”
Who was your favorite professor? Why?
“Mr. Boyce was one of my favorite people there. He was one of the coaches and instructors. I had Bible classes under Dr. Stroop, and they were some of my favorites.”
Where do you live now?
“I live in Northeast Texas, a small town called Mt. Vernon.”
Who is your employer? What is your occupation? What does your position entail?
“I’m active in our church. We go on mission trips. I’ve been on ten mission trips to Ghana, West Africa, and I’ve been on five mission trips to Honduras. My wife and I are both involved CHASAS, which helps children. We just look up for the best interest of those children. We also enjoy traveling and visiting our children.”
Tell us about your family
“I have three children, two boys and a girl. Greg works for International Paper, and he has three children. Our daughter Lisa lives in West Virginia, and she has two children. Shawn lives in Tulsa, Okla., and has four children.”
