Where are they now? Raphaela Jann

Raphaela Jann, a native of Hamburg, Germany, chose to attend Lipscomb University in order to play tennis. She majored in communications with the goal of one day becoming a sports broadcaster. She returned to Europe where she is fulfilling her goal working for Eurosport, “the European leader in sports”, covering sports including soccer and tennis. She is often on the road, but took some time to answer an e-mail from lipscombsports.com.

What sport did you play at Lipscomb? What years? Who were your coaches?

“I played tennis from 2006 - 2009. My coaches were Lynn Griffith and later Kristin Lusk.”

What is your fondest athletic memory at Lipscomb?

“I have many nice athletic memories and a couple that stand out. One was during my senior year when I beat Belmont's Whitney Warren playing with a stress fracture in my foot. Another was my last doubles match at conference with Claire Landry. The match got called when the other two teams had finished and concluded a great doubles season for us.”

Who had the biggest influence on you during your athletic career at Lipscomb? How?

“I have to say Emily Ellis (now Harris) and her sister Olivia (now Bolden) because they led me to Christ when I first transferred to Lipscomb (I was an agnostic then). They invested so much time and energy and I believe countless prayers into my salvation and we had many talks by the Bell Tower. Also coach John Hudy who always made me bench more than was necessary.”

What is your fondest non-athletic memory from your time at Lipscomb?

“Giving my life to Christ and getting baptized on a retreat that Emily and Olivia talked me into going! And secondly our mission trip to Haiti with the tennis team - an unforgettable experience including the drama the night before in Florida.”

What is the most valuable thing you gained or learned from your time at Lipscomb?

“Finding God and learning what it means to feel truly fulfilled and happy in a relationship with Him. I also met my best friend Claire at Lipscomb.”

Who was your favorite professor? Why?

“I have two - Dr. Jimmy McCollum and Dr. Marc Schwerdt. Their classes were always really interesting and challenging. Dr. Mac taught classes that were very applicable to my career and Dr. Schwerdt had us play cybernations for one class in political science. I am still playing that game more than three years later. We also had a lot of discussions that were really fun.”

Where do you live now?

“I live and work in Paris, France.”

Who is your employer? What is your occupation? What does your position entail?

“I work for Eurosport, which is a pan European sports TV channel. I produce what you see on TV. I plan shoots, go on shoots and conduct interviews. I also do simultaneous live translations and co-commentary for tennis for the Grand Slams. I recently presented a German soccer match live in front of the camera.”

Tell us about your family.

“I am still single and my family lives in Germany.”
