It was a tale of two halves for the Lady Bisons soccer team, and the ending was not a happy one.
The Lady Bisons shut down East Tennessee State Thursday night in the first half while taking control offensively with a 2-0 start. In the second half ETSU prevailed scoring five goals for a 5-2 Atlantic Sun victory.
"We played great the first half," said Lipscomb Coach Jenger Parrish. "We were all excited at halftime. We talked about coming out and having to do the same things in the second half. We couldn't back off. We had to step it up even more. We had to keep being aggressive after the ball."
Lipscomb junior midfielder Melissa Chambers led the attack scoring both goals. The first one was high, arcing kick that landed in the net from 45 yards out at 30:02. Her second one was a little closer, from 25 yards away off of a pass from sophomore midfielder Leslie Lopez at 43:32.
Chambers' goals marked the first time this season that a Lady Bisons player has scored two goals in a game. It was also the first time this season the Lady Bisons had scored more than one goal in a game.
In the first half shots were even with both teams making seven. In the second half ETSU out-shot the Lady Bisons 24-3 to finish with a 31-10 shot advantage.
Senior midfielder Erin Ashton opened the scoring for ETSU at 66:05 on a cross shot.
Senior defender Meghan Morris scored an unassisted goal at 73:44 on a rebound shot.
Junior midfielder Emily Fulcher headed the ball into the net with an assist from Ashley Craig at 77:16.
Craig picked up a second assist with a corner kick that was put in the net by Rachel Layer.
To close out the scoring Craig scored an unassisted goal, shooting from the left side of the field into the right side of the net at 87:44.
"I think the nerves got us," Parrish said. "I don't think we are used to being up by two goals. We came out a little bit scared and tight in the second half. They got the momentum going and we couldn't recover."
ETSU made a goalie change at the half. Erin Bilyeu started and allowed two goals while also making two saves. Carrie Hill played the second half, making one save.
Bethany Copeland was in goal for the Lady Bisons. She made eight saves with six in the second period. The team was also credited with a save.
The Lady Bisons are 0-11-1, 0-4 in the A-Sun. ETSU is 6-6, 3-2 in the A-Sun.
