The game:The Lady Bisons added another chapter to their history-making season with a 1-0 win over USC Upstate Friday night in an Atlantic Sun game at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
The win ended a 41-game winless streak in A-Sun games. The Lady Bisons were 0-38-3 heading into the match.
Freshman Emma Scanlon scored what proved to be the game-winning goal less than a minute into the second half.
ETSU is coming off a 4-1 loss at Belmont Friday night.
On a roll:The Lady Bisons have earned points in their last two A-Sun games with a 0-0 tie at Campbell and the 1-0 win over USC Upstate.
Living history:The Lady Bisons 1-0 overtime win over Jackson State Sept. 11 was the first victory at Lipscomb for first-year coach Jon Ireland. It was the first victory for the women's soccer team since Sept. 3, 2006 when they beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff 6-0 on the road. It was the first home victory since a 2-1 defeat if Winthrop Sept. 9, 2004. And it was also the first overtime victory since overcoming Mercer 1-0 Oct. 31, 2002.
The Lady Bisons came back to beat Tennessee-Chattanooga on the road Friday night by a 1-0 score. It was the first tine since 2002 the Lady Bisons had won two games in a row. On Oct. 24 they beat Austin Peay 1-0 and then beat Mercer in overtime 1-0 on Oct. 31.
Making a Proffitt:Freshman forward Halie Proffitt assisted on the game-winning goal by Sasha Sack against Jackson State and scored the game-winner, the first of her collegiate career, at Tennessee-Chattanooga.
Proffitt leads the team in goals and assists with two each and in points with six. She also leads in shots with 29, tied for seventh best in the A-Sun, and in shots on goal with 10. She is averaging 2.64 shots per game.
Youthful look:Fifteen players on the roster are either freshmen or sophomores this season. There are seven freshmen on the roster.
Freshmen have scored all but one goal this season with Proffitt scoring two and Katie Spellman and Emma Scanlon have one each.
All assists have been by freshmen. Proffitt has two and Danielle Stewart has one.
Shelton makes saves:Goalkeeper Katie Shelton was named the Atlantic Sun Defensive Player for Sept. 10-16. She is the first Lady Bisons soccer player to win a player of the week award. She is tied for second in the A-Sun with a career-high four shutouts. She leads the league in saves with 83 and is first in saves per game with 8.30. Shelton is sixth in the conference in goals against with 1.77 allowed per game. She is also ranked seventh in the NCAA in saves per game. She won the NCAA Saves Award last season.
