Midfielder Kate Spellman got the free kick and forward Brandi Besheres got the goal.
With a 1:15 left to play Beshere’s headed Spellman’s shot into the bottom right corner of the net to give the Lipscomb Lady Bisons a 1-0 win over ETSU Friday afternoon in Johnson City. It was the first Atlantic Sun win of the season for the Lady Bisons and only their third in the history of program.
“It was awesome,” said Lady Bisons coach Jon Ireland. “They had a big crowd at the game because they were also playing a men’s game. When we scored it got deathly quiet.”
It marked the second time they have beaten an A-Sun team on the road. The last time it happened was Oct. 26, 2007 in a 2-1 victory at North Florida in Jacksonville.
“We played really well,” said Ireland. “It was tremendous to win, especially to get a win on the road in the A-Sun.”
For the Lady Bisons it was also a vindication as well. Against Belmont they had allowed the tying goal with approximately nine minutes left to play and lost 3-2 in overtime. Against Campbell they fell 1-0, allowing a goal in the final 10 minutes.
“ETSU is one of the better teams in the conference,” Ireland said. “This win should really give us some confidence. We have been so close in so many games. I was beginning to wonder if things were ever going to go our way.
“We talked before the game. We said that if we wanted to get into the conference tournament we were going to have to step up. We can’t settle for moral victories.”
Spellman, a sophomore, led the Lady Bisons with three shots. Halie Proffitt, a sophomore forward, led with two shots on goal.
Goalkeeper Katie Shelton made nine saves on the way to the shutout, her second of the season. ETSU made 21 shot attempts overall.
The Lady Bisons had nine shots overall, six shots on goal.
“One thing we did a really good job of was eliminating quality shots by ETSU,” Ireland said. “Katie made two or three real good saves. But the big difference between our team last year and this year is that we aren’t giving up as many quality shots.”
The Lady Bisons are 3-7-1 overall, 1-2 in the A-Sun. ETSU fell to 3-6-0, 1-2 in the conference.
Sunday afternoon the Lady Bisons continue their road trip to the east with stop at USC-Upstate at noon.
