It was the first collegiate goal for Wood.
“I am sure that won’t be her last one,” said Lady Bisons coach Jon Ireland. “She is a very good player.”
Midfielder Danielle Bethke attempted three shots to lead the Lady Bisons in shots. All three were shots on goal. The Lady Bisons were outshot 18-10 by IUPUI and 11-7 on shots on goal.
IUPUI held a 1-0 lead after the first half. The Lady Bisons tied the game 58:19 of the second half when Wood got control of loose ball inside the six yard area and kicked it off an IUPUI defender and into the goal. Defender Ashley Duggins earned her first assists of the season.
IUPUI responded with goals at 61:20, 61:55 and 89:15.
“We were down 1-0 at halftime and thought we were still in the game,” said Ireland. “We tied it up fairly early in the second half and had some momentum, but we made four mistakes, three in the second half.
“They had a couple of goals scored in front of our goal by players that we didn’t mark. This was a team we could play with, but our costly mistakes beat us.”
Ireland stresses that his players are talented, but mental lapses are the main problem.
“Our players are playing really, really hard, but there will be four or five seconds where someone makes a mental lapse,” said Ireland. “That is something we have to correct and we only have a couple of days to do it.
“We will continue to watch a lot of film and focus on the details and the fundamentals. We have been giving up goals we shouldn’t be giving up and that is the frustrating part. We will spend the next two or three days making sure everyone is organized and everyone knows what their roles are.”
Freshman Ally Marler played the entire game in goal for the Lady Bisons, the first time she has played an entire game this season. She was credited with seven saves after making a season-high eight Friday in the loss at Ball State.
“We decided to go with Ally,” said Ireland. “She has been playing well enough and we felt like she needed to be in goal.”
The game marked the second time this season the Lady Bisons have allowed four goals in a game. They gave up four in the 4-0 loss at Ball State.
The Lady Bisons are 2-6-0. IUPUI is 6-2-0.
The Lady Bisons open the Atlantic Sun portion of the season at Campbell Thursday night at 6.
