Saturday, October 09, 2010If it weren’t for bad luck the Lipscomb Lady Bisons might not have any luck at all.
“Our girls fight so hard,” Lady Bisons coach Jon Ireland said. “In so many of these games that haven’t gone our way we have been right there.
“One of the problems has been being able to score a goal. In some games we haven’t created enough chances. And in some games we create chances and for whatever reasons we can’t find the goal.”
Coming off a 2-1 loss to North Florida Friday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex, the Lady Bisons, 4-10-0, 0-6-0, will play their last regular season home game Sunday at noon against Jacksonville, 9-4-2, 5-1-1.
“Florida Gulf Coast is in first, but ineligible for the tournament, so Jacksonville is basically in first place right now,” Ireland said. “They are very dangerous. They have one of the most talented teams in the conference.”
Jacksonville beat Belmont 2-0 Friday night. It was the sixth shutout of the season for goalkeeper Alexa Rooney.
Ireland would like to have the first 10 minutes of Friday night’s game back. After allowing two early goals the Lady Bisons shut down North Florida the rest of the way. Ireland was encouraged that his team never stopped playing at a high level despite the disappointing start.
“I was proud of how the girls fought back,” Ireland said. “After 10 minutes it looked like we might get beat 8-0. It was a weird start to the game. We could have easily quit.
“Then things started changing. We started winning 50-50 balls and putting North Florida under a ton of pressure. After the 10-minute mark our defense played very, very well.”
Ireland is worried about Jacksonville’s midfielders, especially Liz Fink and Jessica Hurtado, as well as forwards Courtney Conrad and Lisa Hensley.
“Their forwards are very fast up top,” Ireland said. “Jessica Hurtado is an attacking midfielder, She is always in the top three in the player of the year voting.
“They are a very powerful offensive team, even more so than North Florida. We will have a great challenge.”
