McGuire's Two Goals Halt Southern Miss, 3-1

Friday, September 09, 2011

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Having been dormant for much of the season and the entire first half on Friday afternoon in Starkville, Miss., the Lipscomb offense finally came alive in the second half and the women’s soccer team downed Southern Mississippi 3-1 in the opening round of the Bulldog Classic.

“We struggled in the first half against a very athletic side,” said head coach Jon Ireland. “Their speed gave us problems, but after halftime it was a completely different game.”

Limited without a shot in the opening stanza, the Lady Bisons (2-3-1) took a 1-0 lead early in the second half when senior striker Meghan McGuire put Lipscomb out in front with a chip over the USM keeper only 2:28 into the half. The veteran then stepped up and buried a penalty kick at 75:15 for her fourth tally of the season.

“Meghan scored two great goals,” said Ireland. “The chip was a great play, and then the PK was pivotal at that point in the game.”

The two-goal cushion was short lived however, as the Golden Eagles quickly answered with a strike of their own just over three minutes later at 78:15 when Tice Mischa ended Erin Zerio’s shutout bid.

Clinging to the one-goal lead, Lipscomb then scored a much-needed insurance tally in the 84th minute when sophomore midfielder Alex Wagner hit a header past USM keeper Hannah Vanderboegh for her second goal of the season.. Junior defender Katie Wood engineered the play with a cross into the box that allowed Wagner to score.

After being outshot 5-1 in the first half, Lipscomb turned up the heat in the second half to outshoot Southern Miss 10-8 in the final 45 minutes of action. Zerio picked up her second win of the season in net with a four save effort, while Vanderboegh took the loss stopping three Lady Bisons’ scoring attempts.

“We knew this sort of effort was coming,” said Ireland. “We’ve had several games this year where the result would’ve been different if we could have generated more offense. We showed in the second half, if you attack and keep pressure on, eventually the shots start going your way.”

Lipscomb continues action in the Bulldog Classic on Sunday afternoon with a 2 p.m. tilt with host Mississippi State at the MSU Soccer Field.
