NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The 2011 campaign came to an abrupt end for the Lipscomb Lady Bisons soccer team, Sunday. An overtime penalty kick goal by Stetson downed the purple-and-gold on the season’s final day by a 2-1 score.
While Lipscomb (4-13-1, 2-7-0 in the Atlantic Sun) reached new heights as a program in 2011, they couldn’t quite get over the hump and into the A-Sun tournament for the first time in head coach Jon Ireland’s five seasons. The Lady Bisons equaled the program’s high of four wins, including their first ever against Belmont and the programs first-ever two-game conference win streak.
Lipscomb would take the lead in the first half on senior Meghan McGuire’s program single-season record sixth goal, coming in the 16th minute. Senior Kirsten Heikkinen lofted a pass into the box, which freshman Baylee Linnell dropped back to Mcguire. The Roseville, Minn. native took the shot from 12 yards out and beat Stetson’s Grace Turner to the right side for an early lead.
The lead wouldn’t last long. Four minutes after McGuire gave the Lady Bisons the lead, Stetson (4-11-2, 3-5-1 A-Sun) got the equalizer via Katie O’Kennedy’s sixth of the season. O’Kennedy fired a point-blank shot on goal that Lipscomb keeper Erin Zerio was able to block, but the Stetson freshman gathered the rebound and put it into the net.
Following a relatively even first half offensively Stetson would come out firing in the second half, taking nine shots to just two for Lipscomb. O’Kennedy and Paige Butler put shots on net for Stetson, but Zerio made the stop both times. The junior made five saves overall in this game, giving her 97 this season.
In the final minute of regulation, McGuire put a shot on goal, but Stetson’s Grace Turner made the save to send the game into overtime.
In the second minute of overtime, Lipscomb committed a foul in the box. Stetson’s Alexis Hermosa banged home the penalty kick for her season’s sixth goal, ending the game and the 2011 season for Lipscomb.
The end of the season is also the end of three Lady Bisons careers. McGuire, Heikkinen and Danielle Bethke each made their final appearances in a Lipscomb uniform.
