Katie Shelton is hard to miss on the soccer field.
The Lady Bisons goalkeeper often dons colorful uniforms, including a bright red ensemble. But Shelton, a senior from Hendersonville, Tenn., is noticed for more than her outfits. She is a fierce competitor on the field, often facing extreme challenges on defense in terms of shots faced.
Her level of play has once again caught the attention of the coaches in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Shelton was named to the 2008 Preseason Atlantic Sun All-Conference Team.
The team was announced Tuesday by the Atlantic Sun Conference, located in Macon, Ga.
Last year she made school history as the first women’s soccer player from Lipscomb to earn recognition as an All-A-Sun First Team player. She was also named A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year; ranking fifth nationally in NCAA Division I in saves.
As a sophomore Shelton was No. 1 in the NCAA in saves. Shelton was also a second team All-A-Sun selection as a sophomore.
“Katie gives us a chance every game,” Lady Bisons coach Jon Ireland said. “She can come across as calm, but during a game she is very focused. She has to be focused because she usually has a lot of action.
“I think it helps our defense to have a goalie with her experience. It makes everything easier. When you know you have a goalkeeper like that you know you have a chance to always be in the game.”
The Lady Bisons, who won their first ever conference games last season, were picked to finish last in the conference in the coaches’ poll. The Lady Bisons finished 4-15-1 last season.
“Going into this year we believe we can beat these teams,” said Ireland who is starting his second year at Lipscomb. “We had a young team last year. Hopefully, we can build off of that this year.”
