Lady Bisons upset Kennesaw State 1-0
The odds weren’t in their favor.

The last two times the Lipscomb Lady Bisons had played Kennesaw State each game had ended in a 5-0 loss.

The odds weren’t in their favor.

Kennesaw State had won all three previous meetings with the Lady Bisons by a goal differential of 17 to 1.

The odds weren’t in their favor.

Kennesaw State has won the Atlantic Sun Conference regular season championship the past two years and is trying hard for a third.

But the Lady Bisons didn’t play the odds. They played Kennesaw State. And they played a gritty defensive game and held on for a 1-0 win Sunday afternoon in A-Sun action at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.

“It was amazing,” said Lady Bisons coach Jon Ireland. “There is no way that anyone would have picked us to beat Kennesaw, much less shut them out. I told our players after the game there were no words to describe how I felt as I watched the final seconds tick off.

“The joy to me was seeing how our players reacted. They were jumping up and down and hugging each other and running around. That’s what makes it worth it for me.”

Sophomore forward Halie Proffitt scored the game-winning goal for the Lady Bisons off of a cross by sophomore forward Kate Spellman who picked up the assist at 51:34 of the second half.

“We quickly counter-attacked and got a good ball in there and finished it,” said Ireland.

Senior goalkeeper Katie Shelton earned her third shutout of the season, her second in an A-Sun match. She made 10 saves.

“We have the best goalkeeper in the entire conference,” said Ireland. “That showed again in this game. She owned the box against any type of cross or any ball that went in there.”

The Lady Bisons were outshot 35-4 in overall attempts and 10-to-1 in shots on goal.

“We just kept fighting and fighting,” said Ireland. “We played so well defensively. We were so organized.

“This is probably the best all-around defensive game we have played since I have been here. It was a complete team effort.”

The loss dropped Kennesaw State to 7-4-3, 2-2-1 in the conference. The Lady Bisons are 4-9-1, 2-4-0 in the A-Sun.
