The Lady Bisons faced ETSU on Sunday afternoon in both teams' fourth conference game of the season. ETSU shutout the Lady Bisons 3-0.
Although the weather was cold and rainy, the Lady Bucs came out hot, with Kelly Brinkman scoring at the 4:48 mark on a foul kick. Five minutes into the second half, Rachel Van Horn was assisted by Tori Head to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Bucs. ETSU sealed the deal in the 84th minute with a final goal by Head, assisted by Jordan Monty.
"We made three big mistakes and they capitalized on them," said head coach Jon Ireland. "ETSU came in and knew they had to have this game and we just made three big mistakes.
"We started seven freshmen today and when you've got that many freshmen on the field, unfortunately there's going to be good things, but also some bad things," said Ireland. "They were all freshmen mistakes and that's something we are going to have to live and die by."
Ireland says his team will watch film tomorrow and start preparing for the tough competition that awaits them in Georgia this weekend. They face Kennesaw Friday at 6 p.m. then Mercer Sunday at 1 p.m.
"We still have a long way to go," said Ireland. "We're going to try to keep the girls' heads up and help everyone understand it's a long season with a lot of games to play and a lot can happen. We just have to make sure we learn from this game and get better."
