Thursday, October 29, 2009Lipscomb defender Katie Wood was named to the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team.
Wood was selected by a vote of the conference coaches and sports information directors.
“Katie was so consistent this season,” said Lady Bisons coach Jon Ireland. “She is one of the most dominant players we have had in the program since I have been here.
“I don’t know how many times she saved us this season by winning headers and saving goals for us in the last few games. She started off the season a bit rocky at times. But from halfway through the season on she found her composure and got a lot more confident. She is one of the best defenders in the conference without a doubt.”
Wood started all 19 games for the Lady Bisons. She had one goal and attempted 20 shots.
“She is a very good leader,” said Ireland. “I felt like she would score multiple goals for us, but she hit some crossbars and some posts. She is one of our best finishers on the team. There is no question she is going to be very dangerous for us on any kind of set piece because she is so good in the air.
“She was dominant in the air. It didn’t matter who we played. It seemed like she won every header for us. Having a presence in the air was something we had been missing in the program. I have no doubt she is going to score some big goals for us next year.”
Wood, from Jacksonville, Fla., played the center back position, a challenging role for any player, especially a freshman.
“The center back is one of the most difficult positions,” said Ireland. “There is a lot of pressure. You have to make all of the decisions. The play is in front you. There is no room for error.
“If you mess up it is like being the goalkeeper…everyone is going to notice. She really grew up as a player as the season went on.”
