Women's Soccer Preseason Look: Midfielders
A host of versatile newcomers join incumbents Danielle Bethke and Martika Powe in the midfield for the Lady Bisons in 2011.

In truth, almost every athlete on the roster has some level of experience in the midfield. Coach Jon Ireland looks for that versatility in potential Lady Bisons, and it shows on his 2011 roster.

Bethke will play midfield and forward in her senior season. The Inver Grove Heights, Minn., native is one of three seniors on the roster. She is the second-leading scorer among active Lady Bisons with eight points (three goals, two assists).

She will be joined by Powe, a native of Indianapolis who started all 18 matches for the Lady Bisons in 2011. Powe’s eight shots on goal ranks second behind Bethke among returning Lady Bisons.

Sophomore Alex Wagner is a transfer from Western Michigan. While she didn’t appear in a match for Western Michigan in 2010, she does have a year of practice on the collegiate level under her belt.

Three freshmen will be featured predominantly in the midfield, while a host of athletes (Stephanie Romero, Jenna Price, Meghan McGuire, Kameron Stilwell) who can be expected to see time in the center of the park.

Two of the freshmen are middle Tennessee products in Taylor Bearden (Shelbyville H.S.) and Haley Wright (Oakland H.S.). Georgian Madison Krieger will also get an extended look at midfield early in the season.

Tomorrow, we’ll preview the defenders for the Lady Bisons in anticipation of Friday’s season-opener against Arkansas State.
