MACON, Ga. – The Atlantic Sun Conference announced the women’s soccer Academic All-Conference team, Thursday. Among the honorees were Lipscomb seniors Danielle Bethke and Kirsten Heikkinen.
Bethke, from Inver Grove Heights, Minn., maintained a 4.0 grade point average in accounting and graduated early with a degree in accounting from Lipscomb. This fall, she began her Masters of Accountancy program at Lipscomb. Upon completion, Bethke will begin work with Deloitte, one of the “big four” accounting firms, out of the company’s Nashville office.
On the field, Bethke finished her Lipscomb career with four goals and four assists, playing primarily out of the midfield. She appeared in 75 matches and made 64 starts for the Lady Bisons in her career.
“Danielle has been an incredible kid for us ever since she arrived on campus,” said Lipscomb head coach Jon Ireland. “She’s always put academics first and done extremely well managing a tough major and a soccer career.”
Heikkinen finished with a 4.0 GPA in one of the hardest double majors imaginable: mechanical engineering and applied mathematics. She will graduate in the spring and will enroll in a graduate school for mechanical engineering.
The Tullahoma native started all 75 games she appeared in for the Lady Bisons, netting three goals and four assists in her career. She was Lipscomb’s second-leading scorer in 2011 with two goals and three assists.
“Kirsten is in one of the toughest majors for a student-athlete,” Ireland said. “She was a great contributor on the field and has been a great leader in the classroom.”
Ireland knows that what happens off the field is just as important as the games themselves.
“At the end of the day, (academics) is why they’re in school,” Ireland said. “It’s a great accomplishment for both of them to have done so well on and off the field.”
