NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb women’s soccer players Kirsten Heikkinen and Danielle Bethke were named to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District III first team, Friday.
They are the first duo to be named to the Academic All-District team in Lipscomb history, and the first honoree of any sort since Kacey Wade in 2004.
“These are two of the most disciplined kids I’ve ever met,” said Lipscomb head coach Jon Ireland. “Taking on the majors they have and playing four years of Division I soccer takes a ton of discipline.”
Bethke, who graduated in May 2011 carrying a 4.0 GPA in accounting. She began work on her Master’s of Accountancy this fall, in addition to scoring a goal and adding two assists in 18 regular season games for the Lady Bisons.
She finished her Lipscomb career with four goals and four assists, playing primarily out of the midfield, in 75 matches.
Heikkinen double-majored in mechanical engineering and applied mathematics at Lipscomb, and carries a 4.0 herself. She will graduate in the spring and enroll in a graduate school for mechanical engineering.
She started all 75 games she appeared in for Lipscomb, scoring three goals and assisting on four. She was Lipscomb’s second-leading scorer in 2011 with two goals and three assists.
“(Bethke and Heikkinen) made a commitment to achieve high success in academics but also wanted to play soccer,” Ireland said. “It was so demanding, but both of them wanted to finish out all four years. It takes a special kind of kid to that.”
