Rogers scores first career goal in 3-1 loss against Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Lipscomb women’s soccer team closed out the first half of weekend competition with a tough loss to Arizona 3-1 Friday night.

“A slow start hurt us against a very athletic Arizona team,” said Lipscomb head coach Kevin O’Brien. “Their pressure was excellent and we couldn't establish any kind of rhythm. Subsequently the high pressing approach enabled them to win the ball in our half and they scored a nice goal.”

Arizona’s Gabi Stoian scored the early goal in the seventh minute putting the Wildcats up 1-0. Assisted by Kaitlyn Lopez, Stoian’s shot at the top of the box was deflected off a defender and rolled into the goal.

“After about 20 minutes, I thought that we settled in and had some decent possession,” O’Brien said. “But, unfortunately we did not deal with one of their long throws and they scored again.

“That's frustrating because we scouted it and talked to our team about it, yet we still could not deal with it (the long throw).”

In the 32nd minute, Arizona increased its lead to 2-0 after Paige Crouch landed a header shot in the net with an assist by Jaden Degracie.

Emily Rogers secured Lipscomb’s only goal of the night after an Arizona foul awarded the Lady Bisons a free kick. Rogers was credited with the goal after Arizona goalie Gabby Kaufman came out of the box to clear the kick but deflected the ball into the goal.

“Emily scored a long set piece right before halftime and with that the team gained some confidence and momentum,” O’Brien said. “The second half was better in my opinion and we limited Arizona’s potent offense to shots from distance.”

Lipscomb goalie Anna Buhigas faced her first penalty kick of the year. Arizona’s Sheaffer Skidsen nailed the kick into the right corner to give the Wildcats the 3-1 advantage in the 82nd minute.

“Ultimately the penalty kick was our undoing,” O’Brien said. “It was tough to swallow because we were hanging in there and competing well. I thought we might just sneak an equalizer, but it was not meant to be.

“In the end it was a great learning experience for our coaches and players.”

The Purple and Gold had four shots placing two on goal. Buhigas faced 20 shots making six saves against the Wildcats.

Lipscomb drops to 5-4-1 on the season while Arizona improves to 5-1-1.
