SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Lipscomb women’s soccer team closed out the final road game of the season with a 4-0 victory over USC Upstate in Spartanburg, South Carolina Friday night.
"I am really happy for the team,” said Kevin O’Brien, head women’s soccer coach. “We created many good chances tonight and thankfully scored some great goals.
“It was an important match because we needed to rebound from a difficult result in Ft. Myers last weekend."
Junior Anna Lail picked up where she left off last weekend putting up two goals and one assist over USC Upstate.
Lail provided the early 1-0 lead for Lipscomb after edging past the defense for the goal in the 17th minute with an assist from Jade Abarca.
Elizabeth Ashwood slipped a shot past the keeper inside the box to boost Lipscomb’s lead to 2-0 in the 44th minute. Abarca picked up her second assist on the play.
Lipscomb went into halftime with a 2-0 lead taking seven shots placing four on goal. The defense refused to let the Spartans open up any goal opportunities holding Upstate to two shots in the first half.
Lipscomb upheld its solid performance going into the second half, putting up two more goals and continuing to limit any offensive chances for the Spartans.
Paige Miller picked up the third goal for the Lady Bisons in the 52nd minute with an assist from Lail. The current A-Sun Player of the Week footed a pass to Miller near the Upstate back line to give the Lady Bisons the scoring break.
In the 54th minute, Lail made her second goal of the game with an assist from Natalie DuBoise giving Lipscomb the 4-0 lead.
"Anna is playing her best soccer of the year right now,” O’Brien said. “She's been creating quality chances all season, but she's finally tucking them away.
“We are thankful that she's found her form during the most important stretch of the season."
The Lady Bisons capped off the match with 13 shots seeing eight on goal while holding the Spartans to four shots with two on goal.
Lipscomb goalie Anna Buhigas made two saves facing four shots. She played for 73:57 before freshman Kate Mason took over in goal to finish out the night. Buhigas was awarded the win to improve her record to 10-5-2.
The Purple and Gold improves to 10-5-2, 4-1-1 in the Atlantic Sun while USC Upstate drops to 2-12-1 and 0-5-1 in the conference.
"It's an exciting time right now for our program,” O’Brien said. “We're growing in maturity each and every week and the product on the field continues to improve."
