NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb (2-0-2) women’s soccer team put together another shutout in the 3-0 win over Jacksonville State (1-3) at home. The Lady Bisons have now gone 400 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal to start the season.
Lipscomb jumped on the Gamecocks early and never looked back. Less than ten minutes into the game, senior Alex Hickey knocked a goal into the back of the net to build an early lead. Jade Abarca sent in a low-laying cross that was then played over to Hickey by Natalie DuBoise, who was in perfect position for the score.
“I was pleased with the mentality we came out with right from the start,” women’s soccer head coach Kevin O’Brien said. “We wanted to be the aggressors and take the game to Jacksonville State, and I think we did that. We were rewarded with a couple of great goals that set the tone for the rest of the game.”
In the 19th minute the Lady Bisons struck again with a goal from freshman Maycie McKay, her second of the season.
The Purple and Gold placed the final blow to Jacksonville’s defense in the waning moments as DuBoise angled in a goal in the 81st minute for the 3-0 lead.
“Defensively, we’ve been strong, but scoring goal hasn’t been quite as easy. Part of that can be attributed to the level of competition we’ve been playing,” O’Brien. “Today, to see both sides of the ball come together defending well and attacking well, was real rewarding.”
Goalkeeper Anna Buhigas and the defense have held all four opponents scoreless so far this season. Most of Buhigas’ four saves came in the first half of action, with the backline shutting down the Gamecocks’ attack in the second half. Centre-back Carolyn Springsteen saved the shutout just as time was about to expire with a goal line clearance after a Jacksonville State corner.
“We work hard on being stingy defensively, and not giving up good opportunities,” O’Brien said. “We have a very good goalkeeper, so for me, giving a team a shot from 25-30 yards out isn’t that concerning. We don’t want to let those dangerous chances happen.
“I feel like we have a wonderful continuity between the four players that have started in the back all year. It’s showing on the field each and every game. Again, defending is a team effort, and it takes all 11 of us to do it. I feel like the whole team is pitching in their part.”
- Buhigas now has 26 saves in the season to go along with her four shutouts.
- Hickey and DuBoise both notched their first goals of the season in the victory.
- Lipscomb outshot the Gamecocks 19-8, with the Lady Bisons also leading in shots on goal 8-4.
- Jacksonville State earned 13 fouls to Lipscomb’s 10 in what was a physical contest.
- McKay and Lyndie Donegan tied for the team lead with three shots in the match.
UP NEXT: The Lady Bisons will be back in action Tuesday at Alabama A&M at 4 p.m. followed by a home game Friday at 7 p.m. against Chattanooga.
