KENNESAW, Ga. – The Lipscomb (6-2-4) women’s soccer team kicked off Atlantic Sun Conference play with a tightly-contested 1-0 win over Kennesaw State (3-7-1) on Saturday night.
In what was a defensive battle throughout regulation and overtime, both the Lady Bisons and the Owls managed several shots on goal that were thwarted away by each team’s backline and goalkeeper.
Finally, in the 110th and final minute of action, sophomore Natalie DuBoise slotted in the game-winner off of an assist from fellow sophomore Paige Miller.
“I’m proud of our team and hurt for their team,” women’s soccer head coach Kevin O’Brien said. “I know tonight was a difficult result for Kennesaw to swallow, and I wish them the best moving forward in their season.
“In the end, it was an awesome result for our team tonight,” O’Brien said. “It was a sloppy game, and we certainly didn’t play our best soccer, but we found a way to win. And, there’s something to be said for that.”
Lipscomb goalkeeper Anna Buhigas saved seven shots during the shutout, her conference-leading eighth shutout in 12 games this season.
“Our resilience and never-quit mentality is one of our best qualities, quite honestly,” O’Brien said.
“We’ll need to perform at a higher level moving forward if we want to realize the goals we’ve set for ourselves this season.”
Although the Purple and Gold were outshot 22 to 12 overall, Lipscomb only trailed by one in the shots on goal category (7-6).
- This was Lipscomb’s third game of the season to go to overtime. Each of the three previous matchups ended in ties.
- Kennesaw’s lead in the series history is now 10-3 with tonight’s win added in.
- Sophomore Jade Abarca led the Lady Bisons in shots with three, while sophomore Elizabeth Ashwood led in shots on goal with two.
- The goal was DuBoise's second of the season. Miller notched her second assist of the season on the play as well.
