Women's soccer celebrates senior day with shutout win

NASHVILLE – In what was the last regular season home game for the team’s four seniors, the Lipscomb women’s soccer team shutout Stetson 3-0 Sunday afternoon.

“I feel great sending our seniors off like that,” women’s soccer head coach Kevin O’Brien said. “They’ve worked so hard to turn this program around. It makes me feel great that the team dug in and did all the little things it took to be successful today. It really sent them off the right way with a very convincing win.”

The Lady Bisons jumped on the Hatters early and often, with the first goal coming in the 19th minute.

Sophomore Jade Abarca earned drew a foul in the box, earning a penalty kick. Abarca slotted the ball into the back of the net to give Lipscomb the early lead.

In the 36th minute, freshman Brooke Brenner fired in a goal off the post to put the Lady Bison up 2-0 heading into the half.

Freshman Maycie McKay notched the third score for the Purple and Gold in the 54th minute off of an assist from senior Emily Shuler.

“We played both sides of the ball well,” O’Brien said. “We attacked, got numbers forward and created a lot of good chances. Then on the flip side, we defended well. For us, that’s probably been our greatest strength of the season.”

Junior goalkeeper Anna Buhigas earned her conference-leading 11th shutout of the season. Thanks to a stingy performance from the Lipscomb backline of Carolyn Springsteen, Niamh Rawlins, Emily Rogers and Shuler, Buhigas only had to make one save on the afternoon, upping her season total to 88.

‘We got our 11th shutout today, which is monumental. I’m so proud of the group. It was a complete performance. Again, I’m so thankful the girls put in the work today to send off the seniors in the right way.”

  • Abarca and Brenner both netted their second goals of the season, while McKay added to her team-leading mark with eighth goal on the year.
  • Sophomore Natalie DuBoise led the Lady Bisons with 4 shots.
  • Lipscomb out-shot Stetson 13-3, including 7-1 with shots on goal.
  • With the win, the Lady Bisons clinched a first-round bye in the A-Sun Tournament.
