NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb (3-1-1) women’s soccer team continued its undefeated home play for the season with a 3-0 win over Middle Tennessee (2-2-0) at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex on Thursday night.
“The team put in a great performance on both sides of the ball against a really good team, a team that our program has actually never beat in the history of our rivalry,” Lipscomb head coach Kevin O’Brien said. “This was a huge step in the right direction for us.
“The attacking group I thought looked sharp at times, and the defensive group was solid all the way through.”
Junior Natalie DuBoise notched Lipscomb’s lone goal on a perfectly-placed penalty strike in the 33rd minute of the game. The Lady Bisons earned the penalty after freshman Olivia Doak was fouled in the box on her way to the goal.
Doak helped secure the win with a goal of her own in the 62nd minute. After a scramble in the goal box, the freshman knocked in her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Senior Alesondra Colbert finished off the scoring with a goal in the 78th minute of action. Junior Jade Abarca set up the score with a curving assist right to the foot of Colbert.
“We got different kinds of goals which is always good,” O’Brien said. “You don’t want to be predictable, so the way that we’re scoring keeps opponents on their toes. The contributions were great and from different players, both players that started the game and that we brought in.”
Goalkeeper Anna Buhigas collected her third shutout of the season and 31st of her illustrious career. The senior made 12 saves on the night, giving her 42 on the season.
“Anna’s been phenomenal,” O’Brien said. “She’s a great leader and great player who comes up big when we need her to in the clutch. That’s everything you want for a goalkeeper.”
In the game’s waning moments, Buhigas stopped a Middle Tennessee penalty to ensure the shutout.
“That penalty was really important because they could have gotten a goal back,” O’Brien said. “It would have given them momentum and made the game a lot more difficult.”
- The Lady Bisons earned their first ever win over the Blue Raiders in what was the eighth matchup between the two programs. The series record is now 1-4-3 for the Lady Bisons.
- Lipscomb and MT tied with 17 shots apiece, with the Blue Raiders earning a 12-11 shots on goal advantage.
