Women's soccer celebrates Senior Day with shutout of NJIT

NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb (11-4-2, 5-1-1) women’s soccer clinched a top-two seed for the ASUN Tournament as they defeated NJIT (6-9-3, 2-5) 3-0 on Saturday afternoon.

It was also Senior Day for the Lady Bisons as Anna Buhigas, Alesondra Colbert, Lydie Donegan, and Carolyn Springsteen were celebrated for their four years of success in Purple and Gold.

“I’m really proud we could honor our four incredible seniors the way we did,” Lipscomb women’s soccer head coach Kevin O’Brien said.

“That was the message before the game. It was an opportunity to make memories and send these players out the way they deserve because they’ve really changed the culture of this place.”

Lipscomb opened up the scoring in the 26th minute as freshman Olivia Doak sent in a cross to Natalie DuBoise. The junior headed in her sixth goal of the season, and Doak notched her third assist on the play.

In the 33rd minute redshirt junior Ellen Lundy slotted in her sixth goal of the year thanks to a booming cross from sophomore Maycie McKay. It was McKay’s team-leading sixth assist of the season.

Just three minutes after halftime freshman Leah Cernicky earned her first goal of the season and her career. Cernicky placed the ball in the back of the net after a scramble in the goal left her facing an open goal. The series was started with another assist from McKay, improving her team-leading mark to seven.

Goalkeeper Buhigas finished out her last regular season game in the same way she spent the majority of her career, with another shutout. The senior now has six shutouts on the season and a program-best 34 for her career.

“This win guarantees us a number two seed,” O’Brien said. “There’s a slight chance we could still sneak in the number one spot, but even at the number two spot we get a bye for the first round of the conference tournament, which is great. It’s one more game you don’t have to win.

“But for me, more importantly, it’s a chance to train for almost two weeks straight and really get the team in sync. It also gives a few of the players we’ve been missing the last few matches a chance to heal and recover, so we can go into that final postseason weekend with the strongest team possible.”

  • This was the second matchup between the two schools in the Division I era. The Lady Bisons own a 2-0 series lead.
  • Lundy led the team with six shots and four shots on goal.
  • Lipscomb out-shot the Highlanders 17-2, with a 9-0 shots-on-goal advantage.
  • The Purple and Gold earned six corner kicks to NJIT’s 0.
  • Five different Lady Bisons notched a point in the victory.

UP NEXT: The Lady Bisons will be back in action on Nov. 4 in the second round of the ASUN Tournament. Lipscomb will either be the first seed or the second seed, depending on the outcome of tonight’s game between FGCU and North Florida.
