Lundy nets 2 for WSOC in preseason win over ETSU

NASHVILLE - The Lady Bisons started out the 2017 fall campaign on a positive note as they took down East Tennessee State 3-1 at home in the first exhibition match of the preseason.

The two teams went scoreless for most of the first half before the Bucs struck first in the 45th minute. Junior Pauline Vienne gave ETSU a 1-0 lead just minutes before the Purple and Gold evened it back up at one goal apiece.

Sophomore Hannah Torbett, in her Bisons debut, scored just before halftime off the assist from sophomore Olivia Doak to send Lipscomb into halftime on a high note.

The Lady Bisons came out roaring in the second half, thanks to a pair of goals from senior Ellen Lundy. Lundy first struck in the 53rd minute to give Lipscomb a 2-1 lead before finishing ETSU off with a second goal in the 67th minute.

Head coach Kevin O'Brien's thoughts:

"Tonight was great. It was a slow first half for both teams trying to find a rhythm as both squads had lots of players that were new to playing with each other. In the preseason, it was a lot of training, but not a whole lot of scrimmaging.

"So, for our squad at least, it was trying to develop a little continuity and understanding of how to play together for some players who were on the field who were new to the program. We started multiple freshmen. Overall, I'm very pleased with the result."

"I was really proud of Kate Mason, who got her first real start as our number one goalkeeper. I thought she did a fantastic job.

"Justis Bailey at centerback was rock-solid on the ground and in the air. She ate everything up. I thought she had a fantastic game.

"I'd be remiss not to mention Ellen Lundy and her two goals. She's picking up where she left off at the end of last year. For us to have a good season, we'll need her to keep doing that. So I'm thankful that she got off the mark well and put a couple in the back of the net against a really strong ETSU team who I think is going to have a really good year."
