Women's soccer takes down No. 25 FGCU, takes over first-place in ASUN

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The clash between the ASUN’s top two women’s soccer teams ended with more second half heroics from Lipscomb (8-5-3) as the Bisons took down No. 25 FGCU 1-0 with a late penalty-kick goal from Ellen Lundy on Tuesday night.

After entering the game tied with the Eagles (11-3-1) atop the conference standings, the Bisons now stand alone in first place after defeating FGCU for the first time in 13 tries and knocking off a ranked opponent for the first time in program history.

The Bisons ended the Eagles 49-game ASUN home winning streak, and handed FGCU its first loss to a non-Power Five Conference opponent this season.

Lipscomb has lost only two of its last 20 regular season conference games and remains unbeaten in the ASUN this season.

Redshirt-senior Ellen Lundy notched the game-winner in the 78th minute on the Bisons first penalty kick goal of the season. The Eagles were called for a foul in the box resulting in the penalty.

The score was her seventh of the season and the 33rd of her career, further extending her program record for goals.

Redshirt-junior Kate Mason notched a career-high eight saves on route to shutting out the high-powered Eagles offense. It was only the second time FGCU has been shut out all season. Mason now has 58 saves and four shutouts on the year.

The win ensures the Bisons of at least a share of the regular season crown as well as the top seed in the ASUN Tournament for the first time in program history.

Lipscomb Women’s Soccer Head Coach Kevin O’Brien’s Thoughts:

“We are thrilled to have gotten a great result tonight against a very strong opponent. FGCU has a wonderful team that’s as talented as anyone we’ve faced this season.

“Our collective defending and goalkeeping was strong and we had no critical mistakes. When you’re able to play like that as a team, then positive results are more likely to fall in your favor.

“We’ve got an incredible group of young women that play with all of their hearts. I’m extremely happy that they get to enjoy this moment together as a team.

“We’ve positioned ourselves well in the conference, but we cannot lose sight that the job is not done. We have a short window of time to travel, recover, and prepare for a difficult match against Kennesaw State this Saturday.

“It’s a real honor to get to host the 2017 ASUN conference tournament. I’m confident that Lipscomb University and our athletic department will do a fantastic job.”

  • FGCU outshot Lipscomb 15-6, with an 8-2 shots-on-goal advantage.
  • Senior Jade Abarca led the Bisons with two shots, while Lundy and junior Brooke Brenner notched the only two shots on goal.
  • The Eagles earned seven corner kicks to Lipscomb’s two.
  • Mason, redshirt-senior Niamh Rawlins, senior Natalie DuBoise, junior Justis Bailey, and redshirt-freshman Audrey Ann Beck went the full 90 minutes for the Purple and Gold.
  • The Eagles previous two losses came against nationally-ranked South Carolina and Arizona State.

UP NEXT: The Bisons will be hosting Kennesaw State on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the regular season finale.
