Women's Soccer Takes The Pitch For 2019 Season

NASHVILLE – The 2019 soccer season is just around the corner and the Lipscomb women’s soccer team has started its quest for more success with training sessions this week.

After three-straight seasons of falling in the ASUN Championship game, the Lipscomb women’s soccer team and head coach Kevin O’Brien came away with a victory in 2018’s championship match and made the programs first ever NCAA Tournament appearance.

With the success of last year now in the rearview mirror, O’Brien is ready to tackle on the 2019 season with the Purple and Gold.

“We’ve got a wonderful group of players that really enjoy being together, enjoy playing for one another and that for me makes this job such a joy to be a part of this program and to coach this team,” O’Brien said.

“In terms of expectations, we don’t necessarily set goals saying, ‘Hey we’re going to win another conference championship,’ it’s more about who we want to be and the team we want to be. So we want to be a really difficult team to play against. We want to be organized defensively, we want to fight tooth and nail for every second ball that’s out there, we want to compete at the highest level and that’s what we’re seeing right now in preseason.”

Lipscomb will boast one of the most talented and experienced rosters in the ASUN with many of its key players returning from a year ago.

“For me, the depth and the quality that we’ve got currently is the best it’s been in my seven and a half years being here at Lipscomb. So it’s exciting, it’s going to be an exciting team to watch,” O’Brien said.

On the attacking side of the ball, a trio of seniors leads the Bisons: ASUN Second Team All-Conference selection Leah Cernicky, Maycie McKay and reigning ASUN Player of the Year Olivia Doak.

“Doak and McKay are two big time goal scorers. In the midfield Leah is kind of the general, the engine that runs in there. We picked up a transfer, Cami Rogers, from Auburn who is having a great preseason so far and Allie Dunn, who tore her ACL last year, is also playing really well,” O’Brien said.

Defensively, Lipscomb will rely on the experience of Hailey Eck, Dominique Diller and reigning ASUN Defensive Player of the Year Logan McFadden to hold down the back line.

“Logan is obviously rock solid, but I mean Hailey Eck, who is a senior, and Dom Diller, who is a senior are fantastic players and the goalkeeping situation is really strong. We’ve got three that are competing at a very high level right now,” O’Brien said.

The women’s soccer team begins preseason play with an away match on Aug. 11 against South Alabama at 1 p.m. and will open up the regular season at home versus Northern Kentucky on Aug. 22 at 6 p.m.
