Women's Soccer Beats MTSU In Preseason Finale, 4-1

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Lipscomb women’s soccer team wrapped up its preseason play and came away with a 4-1 win over Middle Tennessee State on Friday night.

The Purple and Gold had to hold off some early pressure from MTSU, but were able to grab an early lead as senior Olivia Doak scored her second goal of the preseason.

Doak received a through ball just past the midfield line and took it down the left side of the field battling a MTSU defender all the way to the end line. With a shifty move, Doak kept the ball in the field of play while the MTSU defend ran past and the ASUN Preseason Player of the Year sent it into the back of the net to go up 1-0 in the 18th minute.

The Bisons lead was short lived, however. Shortly after the restart MTSU’s Hannah Tillett slipped a shot by Melissa Gray to even it up at one goal each.

“I would say that MTSU did take the first half, but we came back and scored some really good goals in the second half,” Head Coach Kevin O’Brien said. “We were trying some things out defensively and it took some adjusting, but overall I thought we came back and attacked well.”

It was in the 61st minute when Lipscomb was able to reclaim the lead. The Bisons took advantage of a corner and Katia Hanger delivered with a header coming off the cross to make it 2-1.

10 minutes later the Bisons scored their third goal of the match to give them a two-goal advantage. After a long chip over the heads of multiple MTSU defenders, Doak put it past the keeper for her second goal of the game.

Lipscomb put things away in the 83rd minute with its fourth goal of the match. Freshman Molly Grant sent a screamer of a shot past the MTSU goalie for her second goal of the preseason to secure the victory.

“It’s always exciting to see the younger players go out and make an impact,” O’Brien said. “It’s good to see right now and it will be good for the future. There is a lot of competition within the team right now because it’s the deepest we’ve ever had.”

Next up for the Bisons is the regular season and home opener. Lipscomb will take on Northern Kentucky on August 22 at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex at 6 p.m.
