NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb women’s soccer team lost 2-1 Sunday against the Xavier Musketeers. The result came on the team’s Senior Day, in which eight Lipscomb seniors were honored.
Xavier opened the scoring with a free kick from senior Samantha Dewey. Her strike came from the edge of the box and gave the Musketeers a 1-0 advantage after 20 minutes of play.
Senior Olivia Doak had an opportunity to equalize in the 27th minute, but put her effort over the bar.
Xavier continued to create opportunities as the half progressed, but were unable to cash in on an opportunity against Lipscomb a second time before the break.
In the second half, Lipscomb’s attack came alive, and they found the goal to bring them level. Dominique Diller delivered a service from a dangerous free kick, and freshman Macy Douglas headed home from close range goal in the 57th minute.
In the 76th minute, though, Xavier retook the lead through a clinical finish from Jenna Prathapa.
Lipscomb kept up the attacking pressure, but they were unable to find another goal.
"I thought Xavier really got back into the game in the second half when they scored their second goal," head coach Kevin O'Brien said. "At the end of the game we just got sloppy. They were trying to see it out and we were unfortunately making some critical errors where we couldn't get out. We weren't finding the target players that we had set up and we were just never really able to get anything going for that last 10 minutes."
- Lipscomb was outshot 17-7 and only produced three shots on goal to Xavier's five
- The Musketeers earned eight corner kicks to Lipscomb's two
- Diller and Katia Hanger went the full 90 minutes for the Bisons.
The Bisons will face off against Kennesaw State in their ASUN opener at home this Thursday. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
