Women's Soccer Claims Regular Season Title With Win Over UNA

FLORENCE, Ala. – The Lipscomb women’s soccer team claimed a share of the regular season title with an impressive, 6-0 win over North Alabama at the Bill Jones Athletic Complex on Sunday night.

This is the third-straight regular season title for the Bisons.

It didn’t take long for Lipscomb to get on the board in its regular season finale, as redshirt senior Maycie McKay scored her sixth goal of the season via a header on a cross from freshman Molly Grant in the ninth minute of the match.

The scoring continued for the Purple and Gold in the 16th minute with a goal that just floated over the hand of the UNA goalkeeper by Cami Rogers from the center of the box to make it 2-0. Grant was once again the one to setup the scoring opportunity for her second assist on the night.

Just five minutes later, Grant was able to add to her night by scoring the third goal of the match for Lipscomb. The freshman found herself all alone in the right side of the box and sent a shot into the lower corner of the goal after receiving a pass from Rogers. The goal was Grant’s sixth of the season.

The Bisons ended the first half with another goal pushing their lead to 4-0, as Hailey Eck came up from her defensive position and snuck one into the corner off a corner kick that was sent in by McKay in the 39th minute.

The second half saw much of the same offensive dominance from Lipscomb. It took just seconds after the restart for senior Olivia Doak to score the fifth goal of the match. Grant assisted Doak’s goal, which was her third of the game.

Doak wasn’t done yet, however, and scored her second goal of the night off a long-distance blast from 25 yards out after stealing the ball from a North Alabama defender to make it a 6-0 game.

Lipscomb would go on to close out the game with its seventh shutout of the season and secured a share of the regular season conference title.

The Bisons ended up in a tie at the top of the standings with FGCU, and based on current tiebreaker rules, which are head-to-head results and RPI rankings (FGCU 66, Lipscomb 138), will be the No. 2 seed in the ASUN Championship.

QUICK HITS:

  • Doak’s two-goal night gives her nine on the season, which leads the team
  • McKay and Grant are tied for second with six goals each
  • Grant and McKay are also tied for the team lead with six assists each
  • Rogers has now scored three goals this season, all coming over the last two games
  • Eck’s goal now gives her two on the year
  • Melissa Gray made six saves in the net for the Purple and Gold
  • Lipscomb outshot UNA 17-16, with an 11-6 shots-on goal advantage
  • The Bisons earned five corners to just one for the Lions

UP NEXT:

With the Bisons being the No. 2 seed, they will take on the winner of a quarterfinal match between No. 3 Liberty and No. 6 NJIT (Nov. 1) in a semifinal at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3 at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. The championship match will be played on Saturday Nov. 9 at the highest remaining seeds home venue.
