The A-Sun win was the Lady Bisons’ first conference win since the 2006-2007 season. On March 27, 2007 they beat Kennesaw State 5-2.
“It was a great day for Bisons tennis,” women’s assistant coach Jamie Aid said. “The ladies came out prepared and wanting to win. Every conference match is a hard match, and defeating Mercer took a great deal of maturity, confidence and the mental fortitude to execute what we have been working on for the past eight months.
“We are very proud of the way our ladies competed, the fight they had today facilitated a great win to kick off conference play. I have confidence the girls will be prepare for another tough conference match against Kennesaw State Saturday evening.”
Because Mercer only had five girls, the Lady Bisons automatically picked up a default win at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
The Lady Bisons posted a win at No. 2 doubles to secure the 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Juniors Elizabeth Keevil and Danielle Hansen defeated Bertan and Payrat 8-5. Senior Kara Jackson and freshman Alyssa Bellini were defeated at No. 1 by Luda and Montjow 8-6.
With the doubles win and a default point at No. 6 singles, the Lady Bisons headed into singles play with a 2-0 lead over Mercer.
Jackson came off court first after falling to Montjow 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2 singles to put Mercer on the board. Keevil was defeated at No. 1, tying the score up at 2-2 with a loss to Luda 6-3, 6-0.
After losing the first set at No. 3, Bellini posted a comeback victory over Payrat with an easy third set, winning 5-7, 6-3, 6-2. The win put the Lady Bisons at a 3-2 advantage.
At No. 4, sophomore Carlina Jow also pulled out a comeback after losing the first set to secure Lipscomb’s fourth win. After dropping the first set, Jow blew past Hanna to win the match 3-6, 6-2, 6-0.
Senior Julianne McMeen fell at No. 5 to Bertani 6-3, 6-2, but the Lady Bisons had already secured the win.
With their first A-Sun win in years under their belts, the Lady Bisons will return to the courts on Saturday to face A-Sun foe Kennesaw State at Whitworth Country Club at 6 p.m.
