Lady Bisons open fall season with strong showing
The Lady Bisons’ tennis team opened the fall season at the “String and Swing” Memphis Collegiate Invitational with one of its best showings in several years.

Every Lady Bison secured a victory in singles, and each doubles team picked up at least one win.

Competing in the A3-draw, junior Elizabeth Keevil finished the weekend 1-2 in singles. Keevil lost her first match 6-2, 6-2 to Liz Hamlin a junior from Tulane, placing her in the consolation side of the draw.

Keevil won her second match, beating Johanie Van Zyl, a sophomore from UT Martin. After a close first set, Keevil ran away with the match in the second, securing the win at 6-4, 6-0.

Keevil fell to junior Aleksandra Dzakula from the University of Evansville in the consolation finals 6-2, 6-2.

Senior Kara Jackson competed in the A4-draw for the Lady Bisons. Jackson also finished the weekend 1-2 in singles.

Jackson won her first match of the tournament, beating junior Abby Hogan from Atlantic Sun rival Belmont. After losing the first set 6-4, Jackson won the ensuing two sets to take the match 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Jackson was then defeated in the second round by junior Lindsay Dvorak from Tulane 6-3, 6-0. Jackson fell to Abilene Christian University (ACU) sophomore Hannah Kelley in her last singles match 7-6(1), 6-3.

Junior Danielle Hansen continued the Lady Bisons singles 1-2 record streak, winning one of her three matches in the A5-draw. Hansen blew past her first opponent, defeating UT Martin sophomore Anna Marie Herbold 6-0, 6-2.

Hansen fell in the second round to ACU freshman Micah Hermsdorf 6-2, 6-4. Hansen was then defeated by Tulane sophomore Hila Elster 6-1, 6-0 in her final singles match of the tournament.

The Lady Bisons lone freshman, Alyssa Bellini, also won one of her three singles matches in her first collegiate tournament, competing in the B1-draw. Bellini was defeated in the first round by Tulane freshman Katie Cecil 6-1, 6-1. After moving to the consolation draw, Bellini defeated Ceara Howey in a close three setter, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

Bellini fell to UT-Martin freshman Ivon Simic in the consolation championship 6-1, 6-2.

Sophomore Carlina Jow competed in the B2-draw for the Lady Bisons, winning one of her two matches. Jow defeated freshman Cassie Hochwalt from Austin Peay 6-2, 6-1. Jow was then defeated by Tulane junior Marcela Fonseca 6-0, 6-3.

Jow fell in her final singles match to Anamaria Candanoza 6-4, 6-3.

Competing in the B3-draw, senior Julianne McMeen secured a victory in one of her three singles matches of the tournament. McMeen defeated freshman Spenser Edwards from A-Sun foe Belmont 6-2, 6-3. This was the Lady Bisons second win over this conference competitor.

McMeen was defeated in the second round by Tulane junior Jessica Lange 6-1, 6-0. McMeen lost her final singles match to sophomore Alice Laing from UT Martin 6-3, 6-3.

Junior Samantha Bowman, competing in the B4-draw, followed the rest of her teammates, finishing her singles play with a 1-2 record. Bowman lost her first match to Evansville University junior Jessica Raatz 6-1, 6-0.

Bowman then defeated UT Martin freshman Katie McCall 6-3, 6-3 in her first consolation match. After reaching the consolation finals, Bowman fell to Austin Peay freshman Kimberly Loo 6-1, 6-2.

Competing in the A2-draw for doubles, third-year doubles partners, Jackson and Hansen, were defeated in their first double match by Tulane’s duo of Elster and Hamlin 8-1.

The pair lost their second match to Evansville doubles partners Scherwin and Sorensen 8-3. Jackson and Hansen finally picked up a victory in their third and final doubles match, defeating ACU’s pair of White and Conrad 9-8(4).

Keevil and Bellini teamed up for the first time, competing in the B1-doubles draw. The duo lost their first match to the Memphis pair of Collins and Witkowski 8-4. Keevil and Bellini were then defeated by Belmont team Nunez and Hogan 8-5 in their first consolation match.

Keevil and Bellini secured their only doubles win in their third and final match, defeating Herring and Kamal 8-5.

Second-year doubles partners Julianne McMeen and Carlina Jow found the most success of the Lady Bisons doubles teams, winning two of their three matches in the B2-draw.

McMeen and Jow defeated Belmont’s Edwards and Bennett in round one 8-5 before falling to Raatz and Caire from Evansville.

McMeen and Jow picked up their second win in their final match, defeating UT Martin’s Tilley and McCall 8-6.

The Lady Bisons posted a 3-2 record over Belmont in the tournament, the only other A-Sun team competing.
