Women's tennis blanked in Spring opener at Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb women’s tennis team opened the 2012 Spring season on Friday falling 7-0 to Vanderbilt at the Currey Tennis Center.

"Certainly, we were glad to be back competing this spring,” head coach Andrew Harris said. “After last spring and the addition of Deahna and Jenny, we are excited to see what this group can achieve. Anytime you play against a team like Vanderbilt who is ranked in the top 20 in the country, it’s going to be a tough battle. However our biggest focus was getting better tonight and I think we did that. We are looking forward to having the opportunity to get back out again."

Lipscomb forfeited one point to the Commodores at the onset, with a No. 6 singles win. The Lady Bison were at a disadvantage in doubles play, as they gave Vanderbilt a point at the No. 3 spot.

The Lady Bison went on to lose both doubles matches, starting the match off at a 0-1 disadvantage.

Down 0-1, singles play started off as sophomore Alyssa Bellini fell at the No. 1 spot to the Commodores’ Jackie Wu 6-1, 6-1.

Freshman Deahana Welcher was defeated at No. 2 by Alex Leatc 6-2, 6-2, while freshman Jenny Bork lost to Nelly Radeva 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3.

At No 4, senior Elizabeth Keevil was shut out by Ashleigh Antal at the No. 5 spot, losing 6-0, 6-0.

Senior Danielle Hansen, after returning from a semester off, fell to Megan Gornet 6-1, 6-2.
