Women’s tennis tames Lady Tigers, but can’t quell Lady Flames

It was a mixed weekend for the women’s tennis team.

On Friday, the team stretched out a two-game win streak to three after defeating the visiting Tennessee State University. The Lady Tigers were no match for the Lady Bisons, who won 7-0 in a full sweep.

Deahna Welcher, Melissa Kromer, Jenny Borck and Reagan Panovec all claimed victory in their singles matches, while the doubles teams of Borck/Welcher and Shilpa Naruka/Kromer won their respective matches.

TSU was forced to forfeit two matches in the singles and one in the doubles.

Coach Andrew Harris said that while the Lady Tigers were shorthanded, he was pleased with the team’s performance.

On Saturday, however, the team couldn’t garner the same results. The Lady Bisons lost a close match to the visiting Liberty University Lady Flames 4-3.

Welcher, Borck and Lorena Djuknic won their singles matches, while Borck/Welcher took the only doubles match for the team.

Harris said that Saturday’s match represented improved doubles play.

“It was a difficult match this afternoon,” Harris said. “Liberty did a good job closing out the doubles. We continue, though, to see progress. There, we just came up short on some key points.”

Harris said that good effort from Djuknic helped in the singles competition, but the inability to close out matches caused the team to ultimately stumble.

“Starting off the singles was important to get the first sets, and Lorena set the tone there by getting the first match to even the score,” Harris said. “However, we were struggling at the other positions at times in order to close out some of those sets.”

The women’s team will look to put Saturday’s loss to the side as conference play begins with a Thursday road trip to Florida Gulf Coast University. Harris said he feels confident that Saturday’s loss will help improve the team’s overall play.

“This is another good learning experience for us that the effort must be constant from start to finish,” Harris said. “We are ready to head to Florida.”
