Three victories highlight final day at UTC for women's tennis

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Lipscomb women’s tennis team added three victories on the second day of Steve Baras Fall Classic at Tennessee-Chattanooga.

“All in all I was pleased with the girls' performance,” head coach Jamie Aid said. “From a coaching standpoint we expected our team to be physically tired. They have been working hard these past couple weeks on the court and in the weight room.

“The goal of the tournament was not to have wins or losses, but to step out off the bus Thursday, play the weekend, and step back on the bus Sunday as better players.”

In singles play, junior Deahna Welcher won against Saioa Oscoz from Eastern Kentucky, 6-3, 7-5.

Welcher will play Alexa Flunn from Tennessee-Chattanooga for fifth place.

Sophomore Melissa Kromer will compete for seventh place in the draw. Kromer lost in straight sets 6-0, 6-1 against Tennessee-Chattanooga’s Flunn.

Lorena Djuknic fought hard in the first set before losing to Giovanna Baccarini of UAB in straight sets 7-5, 6-0. Djuknic will play for seventh in her draw.

Freshman Sierra Troxel added another victory for the Lady Bisons. She will also play for fifth place in her draw on Sunday. Troxel won her match against No. 2 seeded Tamara Plocher from Kennesaw State in straight sets, wrapping up the match 6-1, 6-4.

“We approached the matches like practice,” Aid said. “We try to finish each day better than we started.”

Junior Jenny Borck will play for the third position. Borck lost Sunday’s match in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 to Burcu Tari from Tennessee-Martin.

In doubles, Kromer and Djuknic added a third victory by defeating the pair of Faouzi and Jiminez from Eastern Kentucky 8-6.

“Tennis is a long season and I think we displayed a good showing for a first tournament,” Aid said. “This is a young group, and most importantly, a hungry group. We hold this team to a high standard both on and off the court. I look forward to continuing to see them grow throughout this fall.”
