MEMPHIS, TENN. -  The Lipscomb women’s tennis team began with qualifying singles and doubles rounds at the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships Friday at the Racquet Club of Memphis.

The University of Memphis women’s tennis team is serving as host of the tournament. A total of 88 singles players and 44 doubles teams are participating in the USTA/ITA regionals.

“Only the qualifying round was played Friday,” Lipscomb Lady Bisons coach Jamie Aid said. “The only player we had was Lorena Djuknic. She lost in a close match against MTSU.”

Aid is stressing to her players the need to have a strong mental approach.

“As a team we have been working in the mentality of executing points when we have game points and also working on having a winning mentality,” Aid said. “It’s hard to stay in the moment and play the ball instead of the point."

Four players are representing Lipscomb at the tournament. Djuknic and Sierra Troxel and Deahna Welcher  and Jenny Borck are playing doubles together.

Djuknic played the singles qualifier and lost 6-3, 6-4 against Irina Constantinide from Middle Tennessee State.

In doubles play, Djuknic and Troxel lost 8-1 to Flynn and Coots  from Chattanooga.

Welcher will be playing in the singles main draw on Sunday against a player from ETSU at 9:30 a.m.

Welcher/Borck will be playing in doubles’ main draw on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. against Janis/Trousilova (Evansville). Welcher and Borck as a doubles team have recorded a number of victories this fall season.

This is the last tournament of the fall for the Lady Bisons before they step into the season coming spring.

“I hope we see our girls play relaxed and confident,” Aid said. “I am really proud of this group for continuing to improve each day and being willing to work so hard.”
