Women's tennis improves to 6-3 with win over Morehead State

MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Lipscomb women’s tennis team downed Morehead State  University 5-2 on Thursday in Morehead, Ky.

The Lady Bisons advanced to 6-3 on the season.

Sophomore Lorena Djuknic at No.5 clinched the match for Lipscomb against MSU’s  Haley Wild (0-6, 6-3, 6-3). Djuknic made a great come back after losing the first set.

“The long wait to get on the court had tremendously influenced the way I started the match,” Djuknic said.  “Energy was lacking and I definitely haven’t shown my best tennis today, but I was able to adapt to the situation to bring victory after a slow start.”

The Lady Bisons won the doubles point 2-1.

“Today was one of our best days,” junior Jenny Borck said. “We created our own energy at their courts and we all had great matches.”

Lipscomb Junior Deahna Welcher and Borck at No. 1 doubles lost to MSU’s pair of  Briar Preston and Sandrine Beaule. 5-8.

Melissa Kromer and Laura Kent at No.2 defeated MSU’s Haley Wild and LeBlanc (8-5).

“We were very pleased with how we performed in the doubles,” Kent said. “We managed to keep a high level of energy throughout the match and had the confidence to finish off the points which helped us to get the win.”

Lipscomb’s Sierra Troxel and Djunknic won their doubles by default.

Welcher lost her match at No. 1

“The slick courts gave everyone a bit of trouble, as well as the opposing team’s extremely energetic fans and the four- hour drive,” Welcher said. “So the fact that the girls were able to overcome all of those things was awesome.”

Kent, a freshman, defeated  Dominique Chante Mclean (6-4, 6-2).

“In my singles I was able to play to my opponent’s weaknesses which helped me get control of the points and gain momentum,” Kent said.

Borck at No. 4 has done very well this season with doubles and singles both. Borck won  her  match in a super tiebreaker against Sandrine Beaule (6-1,6-7; 11-9).

Troxel at No.6 won by default as Morehead did not have a player at the position.

The Lady Bisons return to action Tuesday March 11 when they face Southern Illinois at home at 2 p.m.
