Women's tennis wraps up Bulldog Classic

ATHENS, Ga. - The Lady Bisons tennis team traveled to Athens, Georgia over the weekend to take part in the Bulldog Tennis Classic.

First round play started Friday morning where senior Jenny Borck faced off against Lauren Burich of Wisconsin, dropping a tough first set 6-5 before dropping the second set 6-0.

Paige Hourigan of Georgia Tech downed Lipscomb sophomore Laura Kent 6-2, 6-2. Junior Lorena Djuknic also lost a close first set to Wisconsin’s Kelsey Grambeau 7-5, before eventually falling 6-0 in the second.

Junior Melissa Kromer dropped her opening round match to Missouri’s Alex Clark 7-5, 6-2. Senior Deahna Welcher fell to Michelle Castro of East Carolina 6-2, 6-5.

Freshman Hannah Gamage went down in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 to Sydney Rider of Wisconsin. Freshman Kathryn Evans received a bye into the second round, where she fell to Georgia’s Laura Patterson 6-1, 6-1.

In the first day of the doubles round robin, Georgia’s team of Garcia and Brinson defeated Kromer and Kent 8-3. The team of King and King, also of Georgia, defeated Welcher and Djuknic 8-2. Lipscomb’s team of Gamage and Borck fell 8-4 to East Carolina’s Castro and Laduca.

On day two the Lady Bisons began play in the consolation bracket. Kent won a hard fought match against Wisconsin’s Burich, defeating her 7-6(5), 0-6, 6-2. Mia King of Georgia defeated Kromer 6-1, 6-0.

Castro of ECU defeated Borck 6-2, 6-4. Alex Clark of Missouri dropped Welcher 6-0, 6-0. Hannah King of Georgia defeated Gamage 6-1, 6-1. Kathryn Evans fell to Missouri’s Brianna Lashway 6-3, 6-1.

The second day of doubles started as the team of McAdoo and Hourigan of Georgia Tech downed Kromer and Kent, 8-5. Georgia’s Brinson and King knocked off Gamage and Borck 8-3. Clark and Lashway defeated Welcher and Djuknic 8-1.

Sunday’s matches saw some Lady Bison’s match up with each other. Welcher defeated Gamage 6-3, 6-3. Djuknic and Borck went a full three sets with Djuknic winning 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(4). Clark of Missouri played Kent, winning 6-0, 6-4. ECU’s Nicole Laduca defeated Evans 6-1, 6-0.

On the final day of doubles, Laura Patterson and Brinson of Georgia downed Kromer and Kent 8-0. Also, Kelsey Grambeau and Burich of Wisconsin defeated Gamage and Borck 8-7(5).

The Lady Bison’s will continue their fall schedule with the ITA Regional tournament in Knoxville this weekend.
