Women's tennis downs UT-Martin 4-3

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Lipscomb women’s tennis team started its weekend with a win 4-3 win over UT-Martin Friday.

Lipscomb (2-1) started the day with winning the doubles point, which would prove to be crucial.

Playing in the third spot, Hannah Gamage and Danielle Kinnen defeated Elina Geut and Tamara Klimek for the first win.

The second seeded team of Jenny Borck and Deahna Welcher defeated UT-Martin’s Sarah Candeloro and Jessica Silva to clinch the point.

Head coach Jamie Aid was happy with the effort her team brought into doubles to win the point.

“We had great energy in doubles,” Aid said. “We’ve shown improvement every week. The girls have great chemistry with their partners.”

In singles, Laura Kent came up injured during the first set but still delivered the first win for the Lady Bisons as she beat Burcu Tari 7-6(9-7), 6-4.

Playing in the five spot, Jenny Borck won the second match 6-1, 7-6(3) over Jessica Silva.

The battle of the top seeds proved to be a crucial match, as it went three sets with two sets going to tiebreak. In the end, Lipscomb freshman Hannah Gamage outlasted Martin’s Hitomi Naito 6-4, 6-7(4), 7-6(4) to clinch the match for the Lady Bisons.

“We held Hannah out last week not knowing where to put her,” Aid said. “She had three match points and lost them to go to tiebreak. To lose three match points and still pull it out in tiebreak is huge, especially for a freshman.

“This was really a team win. We played with adversity and played through it.”

The Lady Bisons will hit the road for their next match against No. 57 Memphis. Play will begin at 6 p.m.
